| The vineyards on the steep slopes catch the
eye no matter where you look in the Walliser
Valley of the River Rhone. The biggest
wine growing belt, an almost closed band
on the right edge of the valley, lies between
Martigny and Leuk. The Walliser Wine
Route runs through this area over a stretch
of 66 km over gently undulating terrain.
Below the vineyards, surrounded by Alpine
ridges, flows the River Rhone. The four
main types grown here are called Chasselas
(Fendant), Johannisberg, Pinot noir and
Gamay. To an increasing extent, even indigenous
varieties like Amigne, Humagne,
Petite Arvine, Resi (Rèze) or Cornalin are
also cultivated nowadays. One highlight on
this trek is the stay at the Saillon-les-Bains
with the hot springs. The best time for this
trek along the wine route is in spring and
autumn. |
